This week, comedian Bill Maher devoted time on his talk show Real Time with Bill Maher to speak about the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
During the Friday, September 26 episode of Real Time, Maher spoke to US Representative Nancy Mace about the violent persecution that Nigerian Christians are facing.
Violence in Nigeria
In recent years, extremist activity against Christians in Nigeria has been on the rise. According to the research behind the 2025 World Watch List, Nigeria ranks as the seventh most dangerous country for a Christian to live in.
This is despite the fact that Nigeria itself has over 100 million Christians living there. The violent activity is particularly concentrated in the northern states, with groups like Boko Haram targeting vulnerable populations, including Christians.
Violent activity is not limited to Nigeria. Other countries across sub-Saharan Africa including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and the DRC have experienced upticks in violent religious persecution.
Where do Christians experience the
most persecution?
Arise Africa
Arise Africa is a multi-year campaign from Open Doors aiming to raise awareness about the situation facing the church in sub-Saharan Africa. By 2026, Open Doors wants to directly support four million Christians in this region who are facing persecution for their faith.
You can be part of it: learn more at opendoorscanada.org/ariseafrica.
Speak up
The Bible says that “when one part of the body suffers, all parts suffer with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). It is more important than ever that Christians around the world speak up for our brothers and sisters facing persecution.
Bill Maher pointed out that he is not a Christian. But the importance of religious freedom for all, and security to live without fear of violent attacks, should be a priority for all, regardless of religion, nationality, or political persuasion.
You can speak up today by signing the Arise Africa petition, calling on the global community to recognize the plight of Christians in sub-Saharan Africa and respond with protection, justice, and restoration.
When one million signatures are reached, Open Doors will present the petition to the United Nations and local governments.

Pray
Will you pray today that Christians in Nigeria and elsewhere who are facing persecution will be comforted and given peace in the face of violence.
Pray also that the authorities take the proper steps to ensure security of all citizens.
Give
- A gift of $48 could provide trauma care to a Christian who has faced extreme persecution.
- $75 could give food, shelter and clothing to four believers in Africa for a month.
- $110 could help a persecuted believer set up a business and give financial security.
