Several people were killed in Jos, Nigeria, on Palm Sunday, 29 March 2026, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on people in the streets.
Reports indicate that the attack happened around 8pm in the Angwan Rukuba community on Sunday. Local partners share that the affected community is Christian majority and the street where the attack happened is a popular gathering place for locals. The gunmen shot indiscriminately into the busy but dark street. Not all the deceased are Christians.
The death toll after the attack is currently unconfirmed. Initial media reports estimated the deaths between 6 and 10 people, but the exact figures remain unverified. However, local contacts suggested that the death toll may be higher than what was reported.
The Plateau state government ordered a 48-hour curfew “following the tragic incident” that resulted in the loss of lives. The curfew is from midnight of 29th March until the 1st of April 2026.
According to a statement from the government, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang “strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice”.
At this stage nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack. Contacts on the ground are still gathering information. There is a lot of speculation right now about who is responsible, but until we have clarity from our local contacts we will not add to speculation.
Pray
- Pray that this community is able to heal from the trauma of the attack.
- Pray that Christians in Jos can be a testimony of peace, hope, and love in the face of violence.
- Pray that the rest of Holy Week does not see any further attacks.
