Jihadists have reportedly beheaded and kidnapped multiple people, during an attack in which they destroyed a historical church building in Meza, northern Mozambique.
The incident occurred in Meza, in the region of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique on Thursday, April 30, 2026. In addition to the church a nearby school was also set on fire.
Some locals reported that people were also beheaded and kidnapped in the attack. This would be consistent with past incidents: beheadings are characteristic of al-Sunna wal-Jamma (ASWJ) in northern Mozambique. ASWJ is a recognised affiliate of the Islamic State
The Catholic Register reports the historic St. Louis de Montfort Church, the offices and residence of missionaries were destroyed with a kindergarten managed by the church.
According to Bishop António Juliasse of Pemba, captured civilians were “forced to watch and listen speeches of hatred”.
